Pre-Reading Activity:
  1. Discuss the statement: “Parents know best”.
  2. Discuss the possible meanings of the title, and make some predictions about what will happen in it.
 
 
After Reading the Story: Answer in full sentences, unless directed otherwise. Marks are deducted for incomplete responses. Answer on a separate piece of paper.
  1. In 7-10 points, outline a plot summary of the story.         (5 marks)
 
  1. Conflict: Identify 2 of the conflicts in the story by type, characters involved, and resolution.                                                  (12 marks)
Example:           Type: man vs. man
                             Characters: Jane vs. Jimmy
                             Resolution: Jimmy stops pestering Jane, and they become friends.              
                                   
  1. Describe the protagonist. List 4 character traits for this person.(2 marks)
  1. Define prejudice. Give 3 examples of prejudice in this story, either from Jimmy or his mother or others mentioned.                             (3 marks)
  1. How does the anecdote (a short re-telling of something that happened in the past) of the swimming story on page 81 make the reader understand what the family is going through at this time?                                     (2 marks)
  1. Why did everyone “change their minds” to go with Paul? (2 marks)
 
  1. Why did Jimmy lie about supper to both Paul and his mother?(2 marks)         
  1. Explain 3 ways the family surprised each other at supper.          (3 marks)
  1. What is meant by the last line of the story?                                    (2 marks)
  1. What is meant by the title of the story?                                           (2 marks)
Writing:
Consider your own past, especially when someone surprised you by changing their mind about something or someone. Write a brief anecdote (personal story) explaining how you managed to change someone’s opinion or actions towards something. 
 
Evaluation Content: quality and quantity of ideas, interest level, organization of ideas.                                 /10 marks
